Erg Chigaga (or Chegaga) is one of two large ergs of the Sahara in Morocco, the other being the Erg Chebbi.

This massive dune located in the Souss-Massa-Draa, is about 50 km west of the rural town of M’Hamid El Ghizlane, itself located about 98 km south of the town of Zagora .

With a length of approximately 40 km to 15 km wide, this erg, some dunes are around a height of 60 m (170 m for against Chebbi), is the largest and wildest of Morocco.

Due to its relatively difficult access only accessible by 4×4, camel or on foot, Erg Chigaga remains busy as the Erg Chebbi, which allows for a real experience of unspoiled wilderness.

Day 1 : Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Zagora

We will pick you up at your hotel/riad in Marrakech and start heading to the Atlas Mountains onto the Tizi N‘Tichka pass the direct route towards Ouarzazate. It is a spectacular and dramatic road that presents astonishing views of snow topped peaks of the Atlas Mountains and many Berber villages. Upon our descend, we will arrive to the cultural heritage site of Morocco; the Ksour of Ait BenHaddou. It was once an important stop along the caravan routes carrying salt from the Sahara and on return, gold and ivory. It is the best preserved and well fortified Kasbah with high steep walls of dark red clay, which is impenetrable in this remote hillside site. Then eventually, we will descend into Ouarzazate where we will head across barren mountains to Zagora. As we descend into Agdz, the first date palm trees of the Draa Valley will show before us. We will be viewing one of the longest stretches of this valley known all around Morocco for its sweet dates. Then later in our day, we will arrive to Zagora.

Accommodations: Overnight in Zagora, breakfast and dinner

Day 2  : Zagora – M’hamid – Erg Chegaga

Our first stop today will be the village of Tamegroute, which is famous for its library featuring Korans written as well as books from the 12th century written on the animal skins. Then from there we carry on to M’hamid , last town of the Draa Valley. Here the road ceases to exist. We will set onto an off road expedition through barren areas and reach the fine sand of the desert. We will travel about 2 hours in our 4×4 AWD till we reach our camp for the night in the sand dunes of Erg Chegaga.

Accommodations: Overnight in tents with breakfast and dinner

Day 3 : Erg Chegaga

We will get up early to take images of the sun rising over the sand dunes, which gives the sand a beautiful mix of colors. Then after a leisurely breakfast, we’ll saddle our camels and trek over the area, crossing the impressive and surrealistic sea of sand dunes.

Accommodations: Overnight in tents with breakfast and dinner

Day 4 : Erg Chegaga – Foum Zguid – Taznakht – Marrakech

We will have the breakfast and then it will be time to say goodbye to the desert and head another off road to Foum Zguid. Surrealistic scenery will lay before us where we can easily imagine how the area must have look centuries ago. Then at Foum Zguid, we will meet the paved road and travel the Anti Atlas Mountains to Taznakht, where we will stop for lunch. From there we travel through the Atlas Mountains and back to Marrakech.
